Historical Notice:
Fourth in the present medium-value series, the new 60-cent stamp depicts a street scene in an Ontario city. The previous stamps showed street scenes in a town on the Prairies, a city in Quebec, and a city on the Atlantic coast. Tom Bjarnason of Toronto designed this stamp with the delicate line work of the illustration in steel engraving on a background of colour lithography.

At present, reflecting the worldwide trend to urbanization, 75 percent of Canadians live in or near cities. Projections indicate that by the year 2000, that figure will have risen to 90 percent. Experts agree that the type of urban environment that will exist in the next century will be largely determined by decisions and actions taken in the next few years. There is much to be learned from the past. In the last 30 years the character of major cities has been radically changed. Because of the absence of coherent long-range planning, neighbourhoods have been destroyed to make way for massive areas of concrete and glass; city centres are organized for the care and convenience of cars rather than people; air and water pollution and solid waste disposal have become serious problems. However, rational solutions are evolving as more people become aware that cities first of all must be designed to satisfy the human need for neighbourhoods, open space and recreation areas, access to public services and facilities, privacy, peace and quiet. The key to optimum urban development is careful design and forward planning based on concern not only for the physical environment of cities but also for the quality of life of those who live in them. In illustrating this stamps with line and wash drawings, the artist, Tom Bjarnason of Toronto, has attempted to capture the atmosphere typical urban environments of Canada: old-fashioned row houses of a large eastern city (75¢).

Historical Notice:
Fundy National Park is part of the Appalachian Mountain chain. Various ice ages left the area with poor, rocky soil. Limited agricultural prospects and the rugged coast discouraged settlement until the early 19th century, when European came for lumber. The forest industry prospered, as did shipbuilding, but by the 1930's, the rise of steel ships and overcutting of the forest had thoroughly devastated the regional economy. Nevertheless, tourists had discovered the area, and even as the locals were departing for greener pastures, officials were scouring New Brunswick for a national park site. The park was officially opened in July 1950. Perhaps the park's most striking feature is the Bay of Fund itself. Twenty-nine foot tides roll in and out twice a day. The receding tide exposes a diverse array of plant and animal life divided into zones according to preference for air or water. Lobsters, herring, dogfish, sculpins, goosefish, smelt, salmon, as well as pilot whales, porpoises and harbour seal dwell offshore. Large sharks are rare, though in June 1930 nearby fishermen reportedly caught a 37-foot great white shark. Wooded flat-topped hills and steep river valleys characterize the park's interior. The forest contains a wide variety of bird and animal life, including the reclusive eastern cougar. This $1 stamp is the first of a new series of high-value definitive stamps on the theme of our national parks as part Canada's total environment. Ron Bolt, the realist painter who illustrated the stamp, found his inspiration in the abstract rhythms of the landscape and the powerful sweep of the tides, which are the dominant feature of the Bay of Fundy.

Historical Notice:
Kluane National Park contains some of the most rugged and stunning terrain anywhere. Even by Canadian standards, the scenery is exceptional. Rock and ice dominate the park. Canada's highest peaks rise out of the world's largest non-polar ice field. Moist air from the Pacific maintains the ice field, which originated during the last ice age and which has given birth to many huge glaciers. These flow down nearby valleys, sometimes covering as much as seven miles in four months. In the sea of snow and ice, huge mountains often resemble angry waves. So forbidding is the landscape, that Mount Logan, the tallest in Canada, remained undiscovered until 1890. Eighty-four years passed before scientists finally satisfied themselves that the peak is 19,520 feet high. Of course, few people want to measure mountains in a place where summer is pitifully short and where, during winter, a thermometer capable of registering -110oF can drop below the bottom of the scale. Thus, only a few mountaineers and scientists visit the area and to achieve their goals they risk falls, frostbite, snow blindness and altitude sickness. At lower altitudes, the park is more hospitable. Plant and animal life thrive. Endangered species, such as the golden eagle, the bald eagle and the peregrine falcon, inhabit the area. There are substantial populations of Dall sheep and grizzly bear Most notable of the local fish is the kokanee, a dwarfed, landlocked variety of the sockeye salmon. The advance of a glacier cut off the creature's access to the sea. Even in the lower part of the park human activity has been minimal. Some scattered relics remain from the gold rush. Limited numbers of contemporary sportsmen, tourists and scientists have made little impact. The park still broods in the splendid isolation of the southwestern Yukon, perhaps wondering what the Alaska Highway will bring next. Artist Alan C. Collier has travelled the length and breadth of Canada, capturing the land in all its variety. The painting on this stamp, "Across the Tundra", is one of several studies done in the wilds of Kluane National Park.
