A 19th-century piano on a 1973 German charity stamp. Note the large number of pedals: particularly in the first half of the 19th century, some pianos had quite a range of pedals for various effects. Nowadays the normal maximum number of pedals is three.
Michael, currently majoring on worldwide to 1930 and British Commonwealth from Queen Victoria to King George VI.
