Not all armadillo species are created equal; that's why they differ. I would NOT have made such mistakes, if I had been the zoologist in charge at the manufacturing site of these maxicards (Switzerland).
Greetings Fellow SB Boarders . On 15 August 1942 Paraguay issued six engraved stamps (Scott 395-397 and C131-133) to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the founding of Asuncion. Asuncion is the capital and largest city of Paraguay. In January 1536, after assisting Pedro de Mendoza in the first foundation of Buenos Aires, Juan de Salazar y Espinoza was then sent to look for Juan de Ayolas. Ayolas had been sent earlier by Pedro de Mendoza to explore the northern rivers of the Paraná and Paraguay River seeking a connection to Peru. Salazar, however, managed only to find another member of Ayolas' party, Domingo Martínez de Irala (keep this guy's name in mind). On his way back down the river, Salazar stopped briefly at a bay in the left bank to resupply his ships. He found the natives friendly, and decided to establish a fort there, in August, 1537. This day being the Christian celebration of the Assumption of Mary he named it Nuestra Señora Santa María de la Asunción. By the way, Salazar eventually discovered that Ayolas and all of his men had been killed by Chaco Indians. . Then, in 1542, natives destroyed Buenos Aires, and the Spaniards fled to Asunción. Thus, the city became the center of a large Spanish colonial province comprising part of Brazil, present-day Paraguay and northeastern Argentina: the Giant Province of the Indies. Domingo Martínez de Irala, throughout all of this, had been appointed as Captain General of the Río de la Plata. This means that he was the head honcho. During his rule, he had churches and public buildings erected, towns established, and the native population subjugated and distributed among the colonists in encomiendas (a legal system that was used by the Spanish crown during the Spanish colonization of the Americas to regulate Native Americans and to reward individual Spaniards for services to the crown). . There are three designs used in these six stamp. The green two-peso and the deep plum 20-peso shows The Indian Francisco. The rose five-peso and the fawn 70-peso depicts the Family Coat of Arms of Domingo Martínez de Irala. Domingo Martinez de Irala and his Vision (the growth of the city Asuncion) is depicted on the sapphire seven-peso and the olive gray 700-peso stamps. All of these stamps are unwatermarked and are perforated 12. . . PARAGUAY -- SCOTT 395 . Okay, my problem is: who is "the Indian Francisco"? I can't find any information about this guy and his association with the founding of Asuncion. I bet there is a good story and I would like to know. A little help, please. . Respectfully,
