Greetings Mr. Craig and Fellow SB Boarders . An epic battle indeed. The actual fight was an all out brouhaha of an hour and 15 minute butt puckering naval duel. Even though the SMS Emden lost (133 (or 134 depending whose story you believe) out of 376 men killed in action) some of the local islanders incorporated the name of the ship into their language, meaning "someone who is tough, manipulative and crafty" and "a big and powerful thing." BTW, SMS stands for "Seiner Majestät Schiff" which is German meaning "His Majesty's Ship". . Interesting reading here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SMS_Emden_(1908) . Because of the battle with SMS Emden, the HMAS Sydney was one of only three ships during the 20th century to receive a Battle Honour for single-ship action for her WWI service. .
