What happen to this USA stamp resource site?

It has been awhile since I was on it.

I loved the information it provided on USA Stamps.

OR am I just using it wrong, any help here?

To make a long story short, the original owner was forced to take it down in a licensing dispute with Amos (Scott). They didn't have the time to redo the entire site to remove all the Scott catalog numbers -- not just a simple matter of deleting, but also making changes in navigation/design. A couple of people volunteered to do all the grunt work and host the new site. They did a great job and I applaud them!

Just for the record, it is my opinion that the original site led more people to buy Scott catalogs than Amos lost in potential catalog sales. This is based on my time in the various stamp forums. However, I will also agree that most of them bought used catalogs and the new catalog sales were few (but still more than lost sales). I don't know/heard/read of anybody who decided NOT to buy a Scott catalog because of the original site (non-statistical conclusion). But I do know that quite a few people go their first introduction to the Scott catalog system through the original site.

Scott is overly concerned with protecting their own catalog sales. They may have the monopoly on US catalogs here in the US, but believe it or not, only a minority of stamp collectors in the US have even heard of the Scott catalog. If they want to try to maintain or increase their catalog sales, they have to get catalog usage out in the mainstream (not just among the dealers and intermediate/advanced collectors). Shutting down sites that use Scott catalog numbers only serves to shut the door to the many collectors who don't know about the Scott catalog. Another case of Amos shooting themselves in the foot. JMHO.

If I wanted to get Scott #'s I would use a Mystic or Kenmore catalog which is free to anyone.

I use the site for information on the stamp.
Which Scott does not supply.
Now, the Stanley Gibbons catalog I have for Australia, has so much more information in it then the Scott catalog has.
I bought a used paper, 2009 set and there is no comparison.
Stanley Gibbons is better for information from the one that I have so far.
Good old Amos has nothing to worry about because in my honest option.

I went back and looked at the 1847usa section of the stampsmarter site. It looks like they put a lot of the original pages back on, not just the Scott number filtered pages.

Makes sense, since StampSmarter DOES have a licensing agreement with Scott. It's good to see all those 1847usa pages with Scott numbers back on them!

The rest of the StampSmarter site is a bevy of information, including a lot of information that normally could only be found by purchasing other books/catalogs. It's very reliable, as there are some major players involved in the site set-up, maintenance, updates, and improvements. The site has gone far past its original purpose of evaluating eBay sellers in an attempt to weed out those selling altered stamps.

Agreed, the wayback time machine is a great archive site. I've used it many times for both philatelic and non-philatelic reasons. Unfortunately, most of the time it doesn't archive all the additional linked pages. But still, better than nothing.
