I grew up in the Canadian coastal city of Halifax, Nova Scotia and enjoyed viewing/visiting the many forts in this wonderful, historical city. Canada Post has released some stamps of these forts over the years. Recently I was researching the North West Mounted Police and discovered that Canada Post has also issued stamps of some of these forts that opened Canada's west in the late 1800's.
I will post the dozens of fort stamps Canada post has issued and I invite Stamp Bears members to also enter other fort stamps.
Canada Scott# 243 depicting the Fort Garry Gate was issued June 15, 1938. Fort Garry was a Hudson's Bay Company trading post situated at the juncture of the Red and Assiniboine rivers in what is now Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Canada Scott# 988 Halifax Citadel, Nova Scotia was issued June 30, 1983. Fort George is the fortified summit of Citadel Hill. The hill overlooking Halifax harbour was first fortified in 1749 which was the same year that Halifax was founded.
Canada Scott# 1054 Fort Whoop-Up, Alberta issued June 28, 1985. This was the nickname given to a whisky trading post that was the centre of illegal activities in the Canadian North West. The legal activities at this fort was one of the reasons that precipitated the formation of the North West Mounted Police.
Canada Scott# 1056 Fort Walsh, Saskatchewan issued June 28, 1985. The fort was build in 1875 and is named after Inspector James Morrow Walsh, North West Mounted Police. The fort was built near the site of the Cypress Hills Massacre of 1873.
