General question about interwar German postmarks

I've recently sorted through a couple of lots and am breaking down the German finds.

I've noticed that many used specimens from the 1919-1932 period have extremely heavy, unattractive cancellations. I do note that the surface on many of these stamps is relatively glossy - including the otherwise quite lovely 1921 series (coal miners, posthorns) and its successors, many of which were overprinted for the hyperinflation. So I can understand that the cancellations will be prone to leaving smears and streaks.

Are these dark, spiteful cancellations typical of German stamps of the time? Or have I been careless/unlucky about where I've been buying these lots?

mourningdoves , sorry about not replying to you earlier but somehow I missed your post. As far as postmarks from the 1919-1932 period is concerned, I have noticed that my collection doesn't seem to show a great deterioration in the quality of the cancellations from other periods. For example, below are three posthorn stamps with great postmarks and I have many like these but also have many with heavy, smeared cancellations as well. One thing that I have noted is that the hyperinflation period has quite a large number of heavy, smeared cancellations but this may be attributable to the large number of stamps that had to be applied to each and every envelope.

I confess, I'm envious. I don't even have a mediocre Weimar cancellation, never mind a splendid & awesome one like that. I'm pretty sure I don't have Lankwitz either.
