I've gotten back into collecting a few years now and one thing that has really appealed to me is the ability to put your personnel touch on your collection. PostmasterGS, I am just amazed at the personnel albums and pages you've done. They are really good. Anyway, The idea of embossing albums and stockbooks came to me a few weeks ago and I've been looking into it. The actual process appears simple enough to do. But has anyone here tried it? The only thing that worries me is that embossing heat gun. Can the material on the stock books withstand the heat well? And I'd like to emboss my albums as well but I'm presently using just standard binders to house printed pages. The plastic covering really looks really flimsy and I can't see it holding up well to a lot of direct heat. I'm really more worried about the stock books.
I haven't tried it, but I'd be surprised if embossing would work well on standard binders or stock books. Most aren't made of materials that could stand up to the heat. You might try it on a cheapie and see how it does.
When it came time to do binders, I ended up going with 3-rings that have a view window on the front and spine so I could customize them more.
Yeah, I'm a binder guy as well. For stuff that doesn't have the clear view slots (i.e., viewbinders), I have the option of slapping on adhesive title-holders -- they look ugly, but my collection is mix-match stuff anyway so I'm not looking for uniformity.
I agree with PostmasterGS, that you may have a tough time with the embossing unless you've got some very good quality stockbooks/albums (i.e., very thick material on covers). Most of the lower to mid-range stockbooks that I've seen that have any sort of markings on them are typically foil stamped. Perhaps your embossing equipment has the foil stamping option. If not, there are tutorials online regarding DIY foil stamping with minimal heat application, although there is a "crafts" learning curve.
Whichever route you go, hope it works and have fun. Keep us updated!
