We're slowly changing all the laptops to Windows 10. It's been an "adventure" (not the good kind). Yet another "fix" to report for anybody who might run into this problem.
The combination of the recent Windows 10 anniversary update and corresponding update of older Office software has been causing problems.
PROBLEM: -- one or more Office programs (e.g., Word, Excel...) will reconfigure each time you start the app; the delay caused by the reconfiguration is significant (on the order of minutes each time)
CAUSE: -- after an update, Microsoft gets confused by the presence of a newer uninstalled version of Office when using a user-installed older version; the newest MS Office is often pre-loaded on your new PC, but not actually installed/activiated; apparently MS doesn't understand why you would want to install an older Office that you already paid for, instead of shelling out big bucks to install the newest MS Office that they already put on your hard drive
SOLUTION: -- for Office 2007 users, quit all Office programs and go to Run command line and enter
-- for other Office versions, change the version 12.0 to the appropriate version (e.g., 11.0 for 2003, 14.0 for 2010) -- NOTE, this is editing your registry; if you don't feel comfortable about doing it, you can download yet another app from MS that will supposed do this for you (and probably harvesting a lot of other info from your computer while doing it...)
