that's pretty interesting - it's pretty rare to find someone using snailmail nowadays (sadly). there could've been lots of stamps collected that way.
Other than the letters I received as a teenager, I haven't taken off the stamps I have received on penpal letters. I almost have a collection of frozen treats (from the US, a scratch and sniff stamp issue). Postcrossing is another hobby you get to see stamps in action (and Postcrossing itself has appeared on stamps from a few countries).
There are quite a few of us trying to promote snailmail around the world.
An aside for letter writing - is actual writing down something by hand, rather than typing on a computer keyboard or doing thumb exercises on a mobile phone.
I still have the letters I received as a teenager. One letter from Singapore written in 1987 said, " The people in Singapore are very stingy."
I am a letter writer, snailmail addict. I send therefore I receive. I also manage a letter writing/correspondence forum called A World of Snail Mail and have a blog (link is in my profile). I sometimes post pictures on Instagram (username morgaine_does_snail_mail) Stamp themes - science, nature, postal history, maps, nice stamps.
