Does anyone know anything about the following tax stamps from Israel? I think that they originally have a similar sized piece attached which is separated when used, one piece going on documentation. I would like to know how many and what denominations to the set, are they all same size and are these 2 just one half of a pair? Thank you.
The two you show are the right half of the pair. The left half shows a menorah instead of a wreath. The series is circa 1960s, but not sure how much after that. There are different overprints based on usage. The go-to catalog is Wallerstein Specialized Catalogue of Palestine and Israel Revenues, which I don't have (but is on my list).
I think my Bale Israel might have a simple listing of revenues, but not sure. I'll check for you when I go to the office to "work".
My 1992 Bale Israel catalog does list general revenues. It is not in the listing, which goes to 1986 for revenues.
I've seen the pairs, so the description I gave in the above post should be correct. It is not a general revenue. I'll do some more research later this evening. The serial numbers indicate it is accountable paper -- so it is some sort of accounting revenue stamp (i.e., some tax stamp).
OK, they are accounting tax stamps, specifically this one is a Mas Heshbonot revenue stamp -- used to legalize bills of sale. The first series was used from 1949-1959. Your stamp is from the 1963 series (don't know if there is another series between). There are at least 14 different denominations for your series -- I don't know the total set size.
Apparently it is listed in Bale Israel in the catalog listing as IT.REV.##, but in an edition later than my 1992. My Bale only has the general REV.## and West Bank W.REV.## sections. It is listed in Wallerstein Specialized Catalogue of Palestine and Israel Revenues. Sorry I can't give you more info. Guess I need to either get the Wallerstein, or update my Bale. So many books to get, so little shelf space...
So, the last picture you posted, with the diagonal text, is the left half of the stamp pair. The previous 2 pics were the right half.
Thanks for confirmation, do you think the last 2 for the right half are from the older version (1949-59) as there is no wreath behind the numbers (plus numbers are black not red)? Also is there a difference between the older version and newer version of the left side?
I don't have the proper catalog, but I believe they are all from the same basic series in the 1960s. The black denominations are in agora, while the red denominations are in Israeli pounds (note the difference in the Hebrew text of the 2 colors as well, indicating the monetary unit). I think there may be some sub-varieties within the "decade" series; but alas, catalog is still on my wish-list.
The earlier series are of noticeably different design. I don't remember what they looked like. But at least one of the earlier series was a wide design, with the label at left just a simple text inscription with no design.
Wow, thanks khj, this is great, I have the 16 in black numbers as well so that is one that is missing from your picture. Now I know what they are called (Mas Heshbonot) I have found more pics and there is a 3 and a 6 in black also.
