Gordon Lee is correct, the $2 represents 2 pesos (peso convertible). There is actually a method to this madness of inscription convention (instead of the previous ₳2 and even earlier $a2, 2 pesos...). Argentina has gone through more than one currency revaluation as part of several plans to get inflation/hyperinflation under control. This is reflected not only on the currency, but on stamps as well.
To keep things simple, I will only mention the one relevant to the stamp in question. Starting in 1992, the currency was changed from 1 austral (= 100 centavos) to 1 peso convertible, at an exchange rate of 1 peso convertible = 10000 australes. The different "peso" values over the decades were distinguished using the monikers peso convertible ($), peso argentino ($a), peso moneda nacional (m$n or $m/n or simply peso), peso moneda corriente ($m/c or peso)... What's interesting is that many of the currency changes are reflected on the stamp inscriptions. The currency used during the time of Eva Perón was the m$n. Calculating the accumulated exchanges, $1 (peso convertible) = m$n10,000,000,000,000 (peso moneda nacional). So if you had been a multi-trillionaire in Argentina during her time, and hid all your money in a cave, you probably still wouldn't have enough to exchange for a modern peso convertible!
With the current Argentina currency crisis, who knows if there may be yet another currency revaluation in the coming years...

The first time I went to Mexico, I was surpised (and confused) to find that they also use the $ for the peso.
Based on yesterday's discussion, I got to wondering if the $ symbol was common to all peso currencies, or just Mexico and Argentina. (You can probably tell I haven't collected Latin America countries, in which case I would probably already know the answer to this.)
In doing a little research, I found this:
In addition to those countries of the world that use dollars or pesos, a number of other countries use the $ symbol to denote their currencies, including: Nicaraguan córdoba (usually written as C$) Samoan tālā (a transliteration of the word dollar) Tongan paʻanga An exception is the Philippine peso, whose sign is written as ₱. Five dollars or pesos is written and printed as $5, whereas five cents is written as 5¢. In French-speaking Canada, the dollar symbol usually appears after the number (5$), although it sometimes appears in front of it, or instead may even be totally absent.
