Germania Overprint for . . . what?

I am fairly certain that several of you German collectors will know right off the bat the particulars of this lovely lady.

Germany -- SCOTT 97 with Overprint

I found this little gal mixed in with a couple of thousand Polish stamps, so I naturally thought it is one of the WWI German Occupation in Poland stamps.  However, I noticed that the overprint did not say "Russisch- Polen"  nor "Ger.-Gouv. Warschau" found on the German occupation of Poland stamps listed in the Scott Catalogue.  Since I don't read German and have a heck of a time deciphering the lettering of the overprint, I have no idea at all as to what is written on this stamp.

Like I said, at least one of our German collectors will know the Scott number, date (or year) of issue, variances (if any), and what the overprint means.

The overprint is "Postgebiet Ob. Ost", which is the abbreviated form of "Postgebiet Oberbefehlshaber Ost".

In 1914, areas on the Eastern Front under German control were organized into an administrative district governed by the "Oberbefehlshaber der gesamten Deutschen Streitkräfte im Osten (Ober Ost)", or Supreme Commander of All German Forces in the East. These areas included all or parts of Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Belarus, Ukraine, and Poland.

In January 1916, the Ober Ost instituted a postal system for civilians in the Ober Ost administrative region. Postage consisted of a variety of issues, but the primary one was a set of Germania overprints. Yours is the lowest denomination of that set. Michel 1. In used condition, 2015 cat value is €2 for glossy overprint, €10 for matte overprint.

They're listed in Scott after Russia, under Russia - Occupation Stamps - Issued Under German occupation. Scot N1, CV used of $1.

I knew I could count on you guys. Thanks a whole bunch. I'm figuring that the first word of the overprint, "Postgebeit", means "Fixed (postal) Area", right Mr. ozie?

Mr. PostmasterGS, as usual, you got your stuff together -- all the information I need plus all sorts more. I did check the Russia - Occupation section of my 2008 Scott and N1 shows to be a green 5p "Aunus" overprint on a Finland coat of arms stamp issued for the Finnish occupation of Russia. The only German occupation stamps (Scott N9-N48) are Hitler head overprints. I'm glad you mentioned Lithuania, because that is where I found 1N1. I don't think I would have ever found it if it wasn't for you.

Scott must have moved the listing recently. The 2015 Scott has a note in the Lithuania Occupation section stating "The issue formerly listed as Lithuania 1N1-1N12 is now listed as Russia 1N1-1N12."

Scott also has a typo in the 2015 listing. The individual stamps are listed as N1-N12 (not 1N1-1N12), but the price for the set is listed as 1N1-1N12.

Goodness gracious, this is a well traveled stamp. Within the last four hours it has gone from Poland to Russia to Lithuania and back again to Russia.

The postmark is from Grodno. A town that was Russian before WWI, part of Ob Ost during WWI, part of Poland after WWI, part of the Soviet Union after WWII and currently part of Belarus. How's that for well traveled.

Wow, I had no idea the postmark was "Grodno". Thank you for recognizing the postmark. It seems kind of like magical cosmic intervention that a Russian stamp postmarked from Grodno was mixed in with a pile of stamps from Poland which eventually ended belonging to a collector named "Gordon."

I'm posting from my iPad, so I can't post my usual level of detail, but...

First one is Germany Scott B1 from 1919. See here. Overprint means "for war damage."

I don't know if the second is listed in Scott. Check under Poland, 1918. More info here. Original overprint is that of the Gerneralgouvernement Warschau, which was the German adminstration in occupied Poland during WWI. The later overprint simply means "Polish Post."
