A siren on a 1976 Polish stamp (an image taken from an ancient Corinthian vase). The sirens in Greek mythology were beautiful winged creatures who lured sailors to their death with their wonderful singing. In Homer's Odyssey, Odysseus had himself strapped to a mast so that he could hear their singing without being enticed to leap into the sea, while all his crew stopped their ears with beeswax.

Canada issued a set of four stamps on Oct. 1, 1990 depicting legendary creatures. The first one is Scott# 1289 displaying the image of the Sasquatch. The Sasquatch as known as Bigfoot is an ape like creature believed to inhabit the Pacific Northwest region of North America

Canada Scott# 1292 depicting Ogopogo was issued Oct. 1, 1990. Ogopogo is a mythological lake monster that is supposed to live in Okanagan Lake in British Columbia, Canada.

A 1971 Swiss stamp showing a basilisk with an 1850 stamp. The basilisk was a legendary snake-like creature said to be able to kill just with a glance: it was highly poisonous (its breath alone was venomous enough to kill) and moved upright on its middle. Some writers said that its breath could destroy vegetation and break up stones. If you were brave enough to kill one, the poison would run through the weapon and into your arm, killing you. The only sure-fire way of killing one safely was to throw a weasel into the "hole" of the monster - which was also fatal to the poor weasel. Basilisks were believed to be native to part of what is now Libya.

A (lethally venomous) basilisk on an Austrian stamp of 2000. The story goes that one of these creatures emerged in Vienna in the 13th century from an egg laid by a hen and incubated by a toad. After its poisonous breath killed the odd workmen, people surmised what the creature was. It was believed at the time that if a basilisk looked into a mirror, it would be turned into stone, so an intrepid volunteer was lowered with a mirror into the pit where the basilisk lay, and, lo and behold, stone it became - to be incorporated into the facade of a house. I assume the volunteer survived, but have not discovered how he was rewarded.
The winged horse Pegasus on a 1930 stamp from Italy. Pegasus was the offspring of the Greek god Poseidon (who was not only a sea god but also a horse god - one of his sobriquets was "tamer of horses") and the gorgon Medusa whom Perseus slew. Captured by the hero Bellerophon, Pegasus bore him on his way to kill the monster chimera. Bellerophon's head grew a bit too swollen and, believing he was a god, he decided he would fly to Olympus, home of the gods, on Pegasus's back: Pegasus reached Olympus, where Zeus used him to carry thunderbolts, but en route Pegasus was stung by a gadfly sent by Zeus to punish Bellerophon for his hubris, and the hero fell off as a result, landing in a thorn bush which blinded him. Bellerophon ended his days as a maimed sightless solitary who shunned the abodes of humans.
A block of 4 1987 Iceland stamps showing national guardian spirits: a vulture, a dragon, a bull and a giant, which are also depicted on Iceland's coat of arms and on some coins. According to one of the Icelandic sagas, when Harald Bluetooth of Denmark (who lived from about 935 to about 985) wanted to invade Iceland, he got a wizard to send his spirit out in the form of a whale to reconnoitre possible landing-places. Swimming into a bay, the whale was deterred by a dragon and other creatures attacking him with poison. At the next place the whale explored, a gigantic bird whose wings stretched the full distance between two hillsides drove him back. At the third place, it was a huge bellowing bull that made him retreat. At the final location, it was a giant taller than the local hills leading a cohort of other giants.
