There is an old adage "He who laughs last laughs loudest". The selvedge is very important to a stamp, it shows position on the sheet, errors, varieties and it can show stack markings and reprint info such as 1 koala = first reprint; 1 kangaroo = 5th reprint etc.
The three cracked plates seen in this post is a good example of selvedge importance, if it weren't for the selvedge they would look like normal 1938 blocks of 4. Your decision to collect selvedge on stamps is very wise.
