How Would You Go About Mounting An Iceland Scott #C3?

How would you go about mounting an Iceland Scott #C3 airmail? I use clear Hawid open-top mounts and, obviously, the normal way of using these mounts won’t work with this stamp. I’m considering firmly inserting the left leg of the triangle into the closed part of the mount and hoping that it’s tight enough to hold the stamp in place. Does anyone have a better idea?

Been burning the midnight oil, so time for a break...

First of all, a beautiful stamp -- one of my favorite Iceland stamps!

I love top-loading mounts, as I frequently swap out stamps for better ones. But the price you pay, is the problem you stated. Even rectangular stamps will shift if you flip the pages around fast enough.

I'm assuming it's never hinged, so sticking an itty-bitty hinge in the back isn't an option.

Here are 3 options:

1. Use a split-back mount for this stamp. I've got a large stockpile of used mounts for this type of situation (normally, I keep the larger ones to cut in half and turn them into top-loading mounts). Even on top-loading hingeless albums, the manufacturers now go to split-back mounts for overly large items.

2. Get a Hawid glue pen (sealing pen) or equivalent, to seal off another side (whether top or adjacent). I'm not a big fan of this, and have never tried it.

3. Staple gun.

Hope you find a workable solution...

I don’t know why I didn’t think of this myself as I’ve been meaning to get one of these for ages to try it out. I just ordered one on eBay and I’ll see how it goes. Thanks for reminding me of these khj!

 No, but it wouldn’t fit in the box (triangle?) in my album!

You could trim off or fold back that upper right corner. It's no big deal, it's just a stamp -- as long as the selvedge isn't damaged...

You're a brave soul. Please let me know how the Hawid pen works out. It's been one of those ? ? ? for me all these decades...

khj , Per your suggestion, I suppose that it could be trimmed like this and a mount used in the regular fashion. NOT!

You need the rare selvedge with bisect printing of the gyrfalcon...

I got a couple of the Hawid Glue Pens a couple of weeks ago, but had not had opportunity to try them out, yet. So, I decided to give it a test run, here.

Here is my test subject. A Panama souvenir sheet, in a large Showgard mount that was trimmed to size at the top, making it a faux Hawid.

Here is the tip of the Hawid pen. It is a firm tip, like a fine tip Sharpie.

The instructions from Hawid would have you place a line of solvent across the top edge. I don't think that's necessary, unless you want to cut the useful lifespan of the pen by at least 90%

I just put a tiny drop, just barely touching the tip to the corner of the mount.

Press it closed; the bond sets very quickly (in just seconds).

Here is the mount with both top corners sealed.
As you can see, since the stamp, by necessity, must be left in the mount when performing this procedure, you will want to make sure you have a wide enough margin of mount around the stamp so the solvent does not spread to your stamp, when pressing the mount closed.

My verdict: 10 thumbs up.

This was definitely not what I thought it was. I'm trying to convince myself there's a compelling reason to get the Hawid instead of commercial-grade glue pen. Remember I'm a cheapskate and have put off getting one for nearly 20 years (I'm sure it would have remained unused and dried out by now if I had).

Which commercial glue pens would be comparable. I have no idea what the solvent is in the Hawid pen, nor what solvent to look for, in an alternative, which is why I went ahead and ordered the Hawid. And you can't be that much of a cheapskate if you're using Hawid mounts, to begin with, instead of Showgard seconds.
