Here's a stamp with a lot of action involved, both on the stamp and the making of it. It is the second highest face value of nine stamps with the same design issued November 23, 1957 and the only one of the nine not imprinted "Waterlow & Sons Limited, London."

The action on this olive and deep claret stamp is the Afghani game of Buzkashi (Buzkashi translates to Grey Wolf in English). The game is like Polo, except Polo is played with a ball and Buzkashi is played with the body of a headless goat carcass. Also, unlike Polo, a Buzkashi game can last as long as four days (about the time it takes a goat carcass to completely disintegrate). Prior to the establishment of official rules by the Afghan Olympic Federation the sport was mainly conducted based upon rules such as not whipping a fellow rider intentionally or deliberately knocking him off his horse.

The Buzkashi stamps were made by both the photogravure and engraving method and by the engraving and lithography. The perforation range all over the place, from 12, 12-1/2, 12-1/2x13, 13, 13x12, 13x12-1/2, 13-1/2x14. This particular 140=pouls stamp is perforated 15x14-1/2. Luckily, all nine Buzkashi stamps are printed on unwatermarked paper.

I have this set of 1996 Mushroom Stamps of Afghanistan. Unfortunately my 2008 Scot catalog lists them but dont give any no. to them.






The set has 06 Stamps I am very much sure I have all 06 but cant find remaining 02 right now

These are what serious collectors (well, the folks that are persnickety about what they collect) call "jam jar labels." The note immediately above the listing of the six stamps and souvenir sheet of the 1996 mushroom set (at least in the 2014 Scott Catalogue) states: "Maviavi Allahdad Balkhi, President of Post of the Afghanistan Postal Administration, has declared that "the stamps which have been printed after year 1989 are false stamps." The following stamps have been condemned as unauthorized by the Afghan Ministry of Communications:"

Difficulties prevented Afghan from issuing stamps from December 1989 through early 2002.
.
Yes, they look like stamps. Yes, they are attractive. No, they have never, nor ever intended, to pay postage to move mail. Their sole purpose is to make a profit, not by an issuing country, but by inscrutable individuals selling them to unwitting stamp collectors.

Don't get . A lot of people do collect these. They do show nice pictures of mushrooms and fit nicely in a topical collection. It's just my opinion that if someone wanted nice pictures of mushrooms there are some nice photographs out there that look much better and are more 'legal' and don't pad the lining of some crook's pocketbook.

I don't know if you are a movie fan, but in the 1975 movie "The Man Who Would Be King", starring Michael Caine and Sean Connery.  Those two rapscallions crossed the Himalayas to the kingdom of Kafiristan where they met up with some locals, one of who got a little to cutesy and ended up having his head used in a game of Buzkashi. An excellent movie!

To the matter at hand your post was from a set of two stamps that were issued May 4, 1960, perf 11 and imperf. There was a clice error in that set, pictured below.

A funny thing that I have not seen that movie. I guess I will need to keep an eye out for an opportunity to correct that problem.

It is seldom heard from the younger stamp collectors the term "cliché error" any more. And if so, they tend to mean something trite or insignificant. Actually, and I'm glad you pointed it out. (For those youngsters that don't know, and old collectors that have forgotten, a cliché error is one caused by improper casting of a printing plate.)
.
The Afghani really enjoy their Buzkashi. Besides the stamps of November 1957 and these of May 1960, they also had another different issue in November of 1960 and a repeat of them in 1961, 1964, 1969 and 1972.

Strictly speaking, "cliché" is a French technical term for stereo or electro (besides the commonly used meaning "a trite phrase or expression"), in regards to a replica of a plate or die, or block made by direct or indirect casting. Philatelically speaking, it applies to all errors made in regards to any individual component of a printing plate. In other words, the individual unit consisting of the design of a single stamp, combined with others to make up the complete printing plate. Individual designs on modern one-piece printing plates are referred to as subjects. That's just another way of saying that a cliché is the individual stamp subject on a letterpress printing plate. Thus, any mistake on a stamp that resulted from a plate, or component of a plate, is a Cliché Error.
