Today...mmm...well tomorrow for most of you

Today is the 26th of January and is Australia Day, a national holiday over here (but since it falls on a Sunday, Monday has been declared the public holiday we would have had, we really hate days off downunder!...)

Australia Day is the official national day of Australia. Celebrated annually on 26 January, which marks the anniversary of the 1788 arrival of the First Fleet of British Ships at Sydney Cove, New South Wales, and raising of the Flag of Great Britain at that site by Governor Arthur Phillip

 But more about that in  my Feb exhibition

Yes... a Happy Australia Day to all the members of the forums who either live in or have association with the land down under.

I was saddened to hear what happened to Capt John Cook's house earlier this week. Whether you have an issue with something or not it does not give you the right to deface a national historic site.

Yes I did know that as I collect birds on stamps and Kingfishers have been a favourite of mine from the get-go. As you probably know the 'laugh' is not really a laugh - just a territorial call. Like a lot of birds Kingfishers are predators and Kookaburras are very good at it, they may laugh inside as they smash their prey's head on a high branch before guzzling it down :

I didn`t actually know that the kookaburra "laugh" was a territorial
thing. Kingfishers are pretty territorial too, but they take it
VERY seriously indeed! They also kill their fishy prey by whapping
their heads on a branch or a rock - better, I guess, than being
swallowed whole! Another kingfisher trait I like is the
necessity of re-courting his mate every autumn!
