CBS Morning News just had the segment on about stamps. They did a nice job promoting Stamp Collecting. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I thought it was well done, showing some of the more "exciting" aspects of collecting without getting too deep into the weeds on some of the more difficult aspects of philately. Hopefully it stirred some interest in a few viewers.

I just watched it and I agree that it was well done and promotes stamp collecting but....

Every time I read an article or see a media piece about stamp collecting, two myths are constantly perpetuated:

1. Stamp collecting is on this terrible downhill slide, "cue picture of a bunch of 60-somethings collecting stamps" and...

2. You have to spend a lot of money to even think about collecting. In one case you have to spend $41,000.00 to find this special souvenir sheet of the Jenny and in the other, you spend the equivalent of the GDP of Malawi to collect 350 stamps!

What gets most of us excited about stamp collecting are the more mundane things like completing a set, filling a page, going through kiloware or even just sorting stamps at our desks. There is a simplicity and enjoyment to stamp collecting that never gets talked about. It is no different than the person who enjoys knitting or gardening or listening to music.

You don't need to have $100 million dollars to enjoy this hobby! I can enjoy this hobby by simply bringing home the stamps I get on my office mail.

The next time they give national airtime to stamp collecting...let it be to us who understand what the enjoyment of stamp collecting is all about.

Well said Darkormex. However I did enjoy the presentation. I hope it will rekindle some dormant stamp collectors and spark an interest in some who have never collected before.I was afraid they would give it about two minuets instead they must have given it close to ten minuets.They sure had my undivided attention. The links still work for anyone that missed it.

cbavier, I didn't say I didn't enjoy it, I did. I particularly like the interview segment with Bill Gross because you could tell, that just like all of us, here is a guy that really just likes to sit and watch the football game and sort stamps.

That said, however, I feel the media always places too much emphasis on this stereotyped idea of stamp collecting as a hobby for old, rich guys when in fact it can be just the opposite.

If I had $100 million to spend on stamps, I bet I'd still spend at least $10 million of it buying $5 packets.
