The history of Germany stamps.

I have been working on a collection of Germany stamps on a mix of album pages. There are Scott, Harris and Minkus pages and as most collectors know there are different names under Germany. I decided to find out more info on why there is Germany, Germany Federal Republic, DDR and Democratic Republic. Stamps of the German States

The division within the Holy Roman Empire is evident in the fact that so many of the German states at this point were issuing their own stamps. Bavaria was the first state to issue its own postage stamps, in 1849. The other state that followed with their stamps included the Grand Duchies of Baden, Hessen and Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Oldenburg, the three free Hanse cities of Bremen, Hamburg and Lubeck, the Kingdoms of Hannover, the three free Hanse cities of Bremen, Hamburg and Lubeck, Saxony, Prussia, and Wurttemberg.

My Germany collection is one of my favorites and I really enjoy the history around the various states and broader German eras, it's also one of the more difficult ones for me to work on since I don't know much German. I recently received a pdf that translated common German philatelic terminology which has greatly simplified using my Michel catalogs to work on my collection though thanks to a couple stampbears who shared it.

My German collection at the moment starts with West Germany 1949 to 1990 and I have printed the pages as Bill has grouped them, the first group is 46 pages 1949 to1970 including semi postal the second group is 42 pages 1971 to 1980 including semi postal a total of 88 pages these are in one 4 ring binder, I will repeat this with about 80 -90 pages to a 4 ring binder.

I use Stanley Gibbons so I have been putting SG# on Bills pages helps a lot.

I am also collecting stamps from Germany. I haven't mounted them on pages yet because I have been considering getting Lighthouse albums but the cost is a little too much for my budget. I have been seriously considering Bill Steiner's Stamp Albums pages and will probably acquire same this fall. I collect Germany from 1872 to 1990s. I also have an almost complete Berlin collecting in a Lighthouse hingeless album.

I enjoy learning about German history through its stamps. This has lead me to buy books about the Kaisers and Chancellor Otto von Bismarck. I am particularly interested in the Germania and hyperinflation stamps.
