Whenever France introduced a new printing technology, there were notable variations. The 1929-31 Sites and Monuments series introduced the engraved pictorial. Here are examples of each of the main varieties:
I collect each country, dead or alive, but focus on France, French African colonies, older German area, allegorical men, carnivorous plants, Vikings, rock art, engraved pictorials.
The Sites and Monuments series were not the very first engraved French stamps. That honor goes to Scott B27, the Industry and Agriculture semi-postal for the 'sinking fund' meant to milk stamp collectors' extra cash to keep France itself from sinking after WWI.
