This is for Admin or anybody that can help. I have 2 questions:
1. In Profile I can view my Activity. Is there a way to delete all the Activity entries instead of doing one at a time? It seems to be a lot of wasted space that can be better used for stamps. Actually, I have no idea what the reason for logging my Activity is.
2. Can I get my own set of Bookmarks instead of a global set? I really do not want to set bookmarks that are global to the whole StampBears.
As for the Activity in your profile, that is something that is part of ProBoards. We have no control of that. You said its wasting space. Not sure what you mean by that, because you can post as many post as you desire.
As for the Bookmarks, when you bookmark a thread, it will show up for you only. I have about 10-12 threads that I have bookmarked and only shows up on my page. To bookmark a thread, go to that thread, click on Actions, and then click on Bookmarks on the drop down.
At least ProBoards lets you know the obvious, that they are logging our board activity.
I'm more worried about Google, Amazon, Microsoft...
A lot of people don't realize, the DEFAULT settings for Windows 10 is to send your online visits/purchases... log to them! Believe it or not, the default setting is also to send them your location, so they know your travel and internet access patterns! So when you install Windows 10, do NOT select the default easy installation. When you customize your installation, make sure you scroll ALL THE WAY down all the choices and uncheck all those marked boxes telling them it's OK to send each of those types of info!!! I almost clicked the finish button before I realized I had to scroll down for further choices (the scroll bar seemed to have "innocently" blended in with the rest of the window )
That is correct Jerry -- each activity is a database entry. There's probably 10Ks if not 100Ks of activity log entries generated each day for ProBoards. It's their choice to keep the log. But they don't have much choice -- it is a legal/security issue.
When you deleted the activity entry, you are not actually deleting the ProBoards activity log entry, so you aren't actually freeing up any space in the database. What you are actually doing when you delete your activity entry is toggle a "display" flag or delete the pointer to the database entry. ProBoards just doesn't directly give you the option of toggling it back on or recovering the pointer.
It's kind of like when you delete a picture from an image host. Surprise, your picture isn't actually deleted, only the public and user access to it. The image host still has your image. In fact, most image hosts will keep "deleted" images for at least 30 days, so it is possible to undelete the picture upon request.
Even after 30 days, it's archived somewhere by the image host, even if no longer accessible directly. Mass storage is cheap now. I hate to guess what motivates them to continue to keep the old files so long. I've worked with NPOs, and I've known webhosts to keep files in archive up to even as long as 1 year after the account contract ended.
That is a similar situation with personal checks at a Bank. When I was working with banking systems paper checks and electronic checks had to be kept for years according to the Fed. At least now paper checks are scanned and saved as an electronic check.
