Oh how I wish this were part of my collection. On her way back from a few days in Florida my girlfriend stopped in Mobile, Alabama and visited and toured the USS Alabama BB-60, a South Dakota Class battleship of the US Navy. She ran across this jewel and texted me the picture.
The USS Alabama was part of the armada of US Naval forces that sailed into Tokyo Bay, Japan to sign the instruments of surrender between the Allied nations and the Empire of Japan on September 2, 1945 and bringing World War II to an end.
What appears to be a hand drawn catchet, air mail postmarked September 2, 1945.
To me personally this is one of the most beautiful covers I've ever seen.
I did a quick look at eBay for VJ covers and was amazed on how many are available, especially between the $5 to $15 range, but none as beautiful as that.
As many times I have gone to Mobile and to Florida in my lifetime, I have never stop to see the USS Alabama. We have talked about it many times, but never made it there. Its not like we couldnt make a day trip out of it. Its only about 2 hours from the house.... hmmmm
