Canada Post Phasing Out Home Delivery

The attached link is to a Globe and Mail article announcing a phasing out of home delivery, a significant increase in the cost of stamps and cutting approx. 8,000 jobs to address its continuing operating deficit: www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/canada-post-delivery/article15868531/

Oh well, I think it may be time to stop collecting new issues of MNH stamps from Canada starting next year.

We face the same thing here in the U.S. Where Canada has apparently been down to five day a week delivery. Here the threat to go to just five day a week from six has met a tremendous amount of resistance. IMO even three day a week delivery here in the U.S. would not hurt anything. In fact it would be beneficial to solve the U.S.P.S. financial problems. Obviously the Postal Unions would be opposed. It might hurt a small number of seniors but the benefits would far out weigh the problems it might present. The business world would be opposed obviously because of the cheap advertising they would lose. They would be forced to find other ways to promote and advertise their businesses.
Lets face it. Take away the junk mail (advertising) and most of us wouldn't get three pieces of mail a week. At least I wouldn't. A solution might be to deliver to Senior Centers, Housing and apartment units, Hospitals and the rest of the mail be put in P.O. boxes at the post office for those who still wish to receive mail.

that would devastate me!! i know i amone in a million but i look forward to checking the mail box everyday... heck some times i get 3-4 really cool things in a week..

Oh it is an interesting time indeed. The proposal is for a single stamp for domestic mail be priced at $1.00 + all applicable taxes.

I did a quick comaprison with the three big courier companies in Canada and here is the breakdown:
Letter mailed from My House to My Office (15.8km, 9.8 miles)

Canada Post $1.00
UPS  $13.74
FedEx Ground $7.71
Purolator $15.26

A single stamp would be $1 if you bought a booklet they will be $0.85 each.

According to the president of Canada Post seniors want to walk to the community mail boxes so that they can get some exercise.

Yeah right... that little old lady down the street wants to haul out her walker and walk 2, 3 or 4 blocks to the box on a slippery sidewalk covered in snow.

Oh... and lets not forget those with disabilities (wheelchairs, canes, etc.) in some cases not even being able to reach the box they were assigned because it is too high up for them to reach.
