Can we talk about USA Pre-Cancel stamps ??

I seen the post about some members collecting and sorting US pre-Cancel stamps. So I looked on-line last night to see what they were and was surprised to find a free album for not only USA but for other countries. I could not find out a few things so I wanted to know if any of the members know of a site where I can find out more info on these stamps.

1. Why are then marked by state?

2.The USA free album has over 600 pages by states, do most collectors collect all states or just their state?

3. Are there mint and used of these or just used because of the state postmark?

4.The USA Scott Catalogue does not list them or has any info ( that I could find) on them. I am sure some are worth more than others.

5. On the free pages I see states names and type with a number. are these scott numbers?

1)This is the website for the Precancel Stamp Society. This website is loaded with information.

2)I have printed out all of the state pages on their website. It came to 5 2" binders when it was all printed.

3)There are mint and used. If it still has the original gum it probably wasn't used by the post office it was precancelled for. Most of what I have seen are used.

4)No they are not listed by Scott. The Precancel Society sells a catalog with all of the known precancels.

5)No, those are not Scott Nos though I'm not sure what pages you are looking at. Most likely the number is the Precancel Society's number.

Janet I started earlier this winter to collect precancels until I realized how many there were. I quickly gave up. I do have a lot of precancels but I also gave Bear and Lorna quite a few to be used in Contests, Give aways and the Round Robin. This is a whole new area of collecting for anyone with the courage to start a new endeavor.

I recently started collecting these. Just won an auction on Ebay for 550 of them for 4 dollars and change. Can't wait til they get here so I can go through them!

What a bunch of great stamps to collect. Personally I only collect the pre-cancels with New Orleans on them. That way I dont get over whelmed with all the different states and cities.....

For myself I will collect Florida and some other states i have formally lived in, like Texas, Virginia, West Virgina, New Jersey. Will collect the inverts, diagonals etc., If I come across any New Orleans ones, I will send them to you when my shipment of 550 of them get here.

You can also just collect a favorite stamp.
I like the four cent Lincoln.
