Tom is one of the good guys in philately. I know some of you are already familiar with SAN. Whether you use SAN or not, it is a very useful reference. I joined SAN in the early days, and have watched it grow into a major player in the stamp auction industry. While I rarely bid on SAN nowadays, I think it is a good experience for members to at least peruse/watch if you haven't participated in live auctions before -- here, I define a live auction as one in which a real person auctioneer is monitoring/controlling the auction in real time, as opposed to a bot (like eBay) that just records bids until the fixed close-of-auction deadline.

The Penny Post turned letter writing from a privilege for the wealthy into an affordable means of communication. There is a dark side, however; the Penny Post became a tool for blackmail, slander, unsolicited mass mailings, and junk mail—Victorian problems that remain relevant to our lives today.

Her book Posting It received the 2010 DeLong Book History Prize for the best book on any aspect of the creation, dissemination, or uses of script or print awarded by SHARP (Society for the History of Authorship, Reading and Publishing) and the Vermeil Medal from the Chicago Philatelic Society at CHICAGOPEX 2011.
