Are Macs the Naggingest Computers or What?

My Windows desktop bonked on me and my daughter has lent me her old MacBook Air. This is the first time I'm experiencing using a Mac and I want to smash it in the driveway and run over it. I thought Windows was bad about protecting you from yourself, but Mac is worse by an order of magnitude.

Download an app from a website instead of the App Store? Apple's not content to simply flash a message and let you click on "Install anyway." No, you have to go through a whole routine of going into System Preferences, navigate to Security, and then tell it to allow the program.

I was just trying to edit some images for my next YT episode. Every time I clicked on an image to open it in Affinity Photo, a message came up warning me this "application" was downloaded from the internet, do I still want to open it?

Every time I use Google, a message pops up, "Google wants to use your location." The only option besides, "Allow," is a checkbox saying, "remember my choice for one day." No option to, "Always allow."

Is this what Mac users have to put up with, day in and day out? What a bunch of malarkey.

When I started using this Mac, I was impressed with how much better it was able to handle my video editing than my old desktop, and the Mac is a year older (2012), so I was considering an M1 Mac for my next machine. But after all this over-protectiveness it is making me suffer through, I have serious doubts, now.

Somebody tell me it gets better (but only say it if it's true).

You’re doing something wrong. Not sure what, but I use a Mac daily and don’t have those issues.

I use a Mac for everything but gaming. MacOS is just so much better designed for doing productivity-type work.

That’s what I’m hoping, and the reason I posted. Is there something in System Preferences where I can say, shut up and let me live my life? All these interruptions are definitely anti-productive.

Oh, and while you’re here: I’m having trouble with StampFix. I can’t get it to straighten and crop multiple individual images. I will load 4 or 5 (or however many) images, and I will get the message 4 or 5 (or however many) images processed successfully, but checking my golder there’s nothing. The original skewed uncropped images are there, and no corrected ones. Any ideas what’s going on? Loading and saving one image at a time works, but not multiple single images.

Just like stained Windows, there are different levels of security settings. The default won't cause those problems. Guess your daughter is wise and decided to protect her old Mac and set the security to maximum protection before handing it over to backwaters Dad.

I use the older versions, so this may not apply. I remember running into this issue. If I remember, make sure you have the destination batch folder set properly. I recall one of the versions I used, if I didn't have the destination batch folder set, it would process but not actually save.

Well, now you’ve lost me. I’ve never heard the term “destination batch folder” let alone learned how the set it.
